Patterning Skills
Students work in small groups on various skills such as patterning.  First students place the teddy bears on the corresponding bear to make a pattern.  They start with an AB pattern and move to more complex patterns such as AAB.  To show mastery of this skill they make a pattern without the use of the pattern paper.  Then can also transfer that pattern onto their own bear patterning sheet by coloring a pattern they make.  Every student is at a different mastery level and that's okay!

Students used jelly beans to make a pattern.  Here the student  is working on an AABB pattern.  He was able to transfer that pattern to make the same pattern with paper jelly beans.

Our author study of Dr. Seuss included  rhyming words, trying green eggs and ham, and graphing the results and sorting shoes during Silly Sock Day.

The Name Game
We spend lots of time writing our names in various ways.  Each day the students check in on the tree by moving their name to the tree (first name until January then last name).  That tells everyone that they are here.  They also write their name on a laminated sheet with green and red dots on yellow letters to tell them where to start and stop each letter.  Here Ella is making her name using beans as plant of a plant unit.

Literacy Skills

After reading Penguin Pete in Alphabet Town, we made our own paper bag penguins.  During centers we picked a letter for Penguin Pete.  We learned that he only eats the letter P.  The student had to say the letter before deciding if Penguin Pete would eat it.  The cards could also be programmed with words as well.
